Relief Prints

I’ve been working on multi-block woodcuts which has been an exercise in patience…not normally one of my strengths. The two media are at opposite ends of the spontaneity spectrum. There’s a lot nearly instant gratification in painting and it’s easy to change ones mind and paint things out when things don’t look quite right. Woodcuts, not so much. Planning is important and once the block is cut there’s only so much you can do with plastic wood to make corrections or changes…and then there’s the printing to be done! Once the ink is on the paper it’s there to stay. If it’s not right it goes in the trash. Why do I do them then? Every now and then it’s nice just to zone out, listen to music, and do something completely methodical, like spending a week cutting an image in a block.
